Whipped iron…Yes…That is what it looked like, thought I had no idea how you would whip iron. I had seen pictures of this event, this creation of new earth, but to be here, standing on it was eerie, astoudning, and incredible! And my busband seemed to love it also, as I looked ahead and saw him striking out over the grey sea with a determination I hadn’t observed in his countenance in awhile. He was “into this”... Really into it. We were staning on a lava flow that was not very old, not yet sprouting new earth and life. And it was hot. You could feel the warmth of the cooling new earth on your face and in your feet. To think the earth you were standing on was so much younger than you. Fascinating. It would eventually break down and grow plants, but right now it was new earth. Some had a silver sheen to it that made it look unearthly…What makes that look so shiny, I though to myself? And what is that smell? I would have to do som research when I returned to real life, but the questions were mounting. This was “beginning”...Did all of the earth look as this does at one time? We were captivated. And getting very warm. I shed my jacket- it had been37 degrees at the Information Center we had stopped at. It must be close to 95 degrees as I stood in that spot above hot flowing lava. You could hear the hissing of the lava hitting the sea water and it made it all the more eerie. The steam from the contact was rising up over the ocean waters, making its own little cloud…This was worth travelling the 12 hours for in itself and we had already fell in love with many other sites on the islands. This was different. This had an essence that hit your soul as you thought about the power involved in this occurrence. I would never forget this. It is now a part of me. This Big Island.
