Our Name and Nicknames

For a long time, our home has been commonly called, “the Big Island.” But its true name is simply Hawaii; and these days, more and more often, that is the name locals use—Hawaii Island or the Island of Hawaii. We have other nicknames too: the Volcano Island, the Orchid Island. We are all of these—and more.
