Hilo Coffee Mill

Supports farms, farmers and agriculture, encouraging and assisting sustainable growing methods. Reuses and recycles cans, cardboard and "anything else possible." Byproducts of coffee processing / milling are used as mulch, compost and elsewhere on the coffee farm; biodegradeable paper products are used for food and beverage service. Chickens are raised for eggs and for fertilizer; local products are used when possible, tours incorporate history/heritage of the area.

Mauna Loa Macadamia Nut Factory & Visitors Center

Mauna Loa provides 70% of its power needs from renewable sources, using macadamia nut hulls/shells and used motor oil from another local company to run generators to dry macadamias and for its processing factory. Macadamia nut husks are returned to surrounding orchards to use as mulch and for planting new trees. All cardboard from case goods is recycled and the company employees a local workforce and uses services provided by local businesses and vendors.

Capt. Dan personally has personally narrated his whalewatching tours for three decades, giving guests an authentic experience is experiencing and learning about Hawaii's magnificent marine mammals in their natural habitat. On-board naturalists are all knowledgeable and highly trained; fruits and snacks all locally grown and produced; boat engines are new and energy-efficient; a portion of proceeds supports research on wild whale populations; and tours emphasize conserving marine mammals and preserving and caring for Hawaii's marine environment.
