  1. Before coming on your Hawaii spa & wellness vacation, take a good look at the Websites of healers, spas, eco-adventure tours and others you’re considering. Then phone them to learn more about what they offer, and to get a feel for their style. This will help you determine if they’re right for you.
  2. Plan early. Sometimes health practitioners are unavailable because they’re traveling or participating in events, and retreat facilities may be booked far in advance.
  3. Give yourself a full day to settle in before you begin working with any healer except a massage therapist or chiropractor, who can help remove the kinks that arise from travel.
  4. When planning your trip, give yourself plenty of down time to integrate the work you will be doing—and enough drive time to get everywhere at a leisurely pace. And consider staying longer in a given location, rather than hurrying all over the island in a short time.
  5. Bring items that will help you relax and enhance your experience, for instance: a journal to write about your experiences, candles and incense, a portable music player, a small hammock and a favorite sun hat.
